List of Political Parties (United States)

The United States is a federal constitutional republic, which the President (also known as the head of state and government), Congress, and Judiciary share powers reserved to the national government, and the federal government shares sovereignty with the state governments.

The list of the parties are :

“Constitution Party” which is a right-wing political party in the United States. It was founded as the “U.S. Taxpayers’ Party” in 1991 and later was changed to the Constitution Party. The party’s platform defines itself as predicated on the principles of the nation’s founding documents. The party currently puts a large focus on immigration, calling for stricter penalties towards illegal immigrants and a moratorium on legal immigration until all federal subsidies to immigrants are discontinued.

“Democratic Party”, one of the two major contemporary political parties along with the Republican Party. This party has promoted a socially liberal and progressive platform, and its Congressional caucus is composed of progressives, liberals, and centrists. The party has the lengthiest record of continuous operation and is among the oldest political parties in the world.

“Green Party” is a national American political party founded in 1991 as a voluntary association. With its founding, the Green Party of the United States became the primary national Green organization, eclipsing the Green Party which emphasized non-electoral movement building. The Association, a forerunner organization, first gained widespread public attention in 1996 and 2000. The party has no current representation and controls no governorships or other state-wide elected positions. At the state legislature level, the party controls only one seat.

“Liberian Party” is an American third party that reflects the ideas of libertarianism. The founding of the party was prompted in part due to concerns about the Vietnam War, conscription, and the end of the Gold Standard. Many members, such as Libertarian Party presidential candidate say they are more socially liberal but more fiscally conservative than the Republicans. This is the third largest party.

“Reform Party” is a political party in the United States, founded in 1995. Americans were disillusioned with the state of politics as being corrupt and unable to deal with vital issues and desired a viable alternative to the Republican and Democratic Parties. The party has nominated different candidates over the years. The party has been torn by infighting and disagreements, which it seeks to overcome.

“Republican Party” is one of the two major contemporary political parties, the other being the Democratic Party. Founded by anti-slavery activists, it dominated politics nationally for most of the period from 1860 to 1932. There have been 18 Republican presidents. Currently the party’s platform is generally based upon American conservatism in contrast to the Democratic Party. American conservatism of the Republican Party is not wholly based upon rejection of the political ideology of liberism. Rather, the Republican Party’s conservatism is largely based upon its support of classical principles.

“Socialist Party” is a multi-tendency democratic socialist party. The party is officially committed to left-wing democratic socialism. The Socialist Party USA, along with its predecessors, has received varying degrees of support, when its candidates have competed against those from the Republican and Democratic parties. Some attribute this to the party having to compete with the financial dominance of the two major parties, as well as the limitations of the United States’ legislatively and judicially entrenched two-party systam. The Party supports third-party candidates, particularly socialists, and opposes the candidates of the two major parties.
